What Is A Fisher House?

Fisher HouseIt’s a 21 suite lodging facility for active duty and veteran families who have loved ones that are in-patients at the James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital in Tampa.  Families stay at the house at no cost.

What Makes The Tampa House Special?

The house supports the Tampa VA hospital which is one of only four VA hospitals across the country designated a “poly-trauma” facility.   This means the hospital treats some of the most traumatically injured military warriors wounded in Iraq or Afghanistan.  Virtually all of their families live out of state and could spend significant resources to stay at their loved ones bedside to assist in their recovery.

Last fiscal year alone, the Tampa house led the way of all VA Fisher Houses with:

  • A 100% occupancy rate
  • The highest number of active duty families in residence
  • The longest duration of stay

How Is It Funded?

The house is built by donations to the Fisher House Foundation and then “gifted” to the medical facility.  The hospital assumes responsibility for general operating costs, but all of the “creature comfort” needs of the guests are provided through monetary or in-kind donations from the community.   100% of donated funds go directly to support the guests in residence.
